Bronze tone ribbon nautilus shell headband with beads.
This unique headband is the perfect, stylishly understated hair accessory for weddings and parties.
The intricate nautilus shells, which feature on this piece, have been created using a couture millinery technique.
I have made the shells from pleated petersham ribbon, in two complimentary bronze tones, and finished with metallic seed beads, for an extra touch of glamour and sparkle.
For the larger shell I have chosen a lighter tone ribbon, paired with copper-tone metallic-finish beads. Meanwhile, the smaller shell at the top of the decoration is flatter and finished with bronze metallic beads.
Finally, I have wrapped the metal headband, which the shells are attached to, in complimentary gold ribbon.

How to Wear
I have designed this piece so that it can be worn to the left or right of the head. The metal headband provides a secure fit, while I have backed the ribbon decoration with felt, to provide comfort for the wearer.
Where to Wear
This piece is understated enough to be worn to any event. However, it’s also special enough to be befitting of a bridesmaid or mother of the bride, at the most formal of weddings.
This nautilus shell headband would also suit all seasons, although I do think the warm bronze tones make it especially fitting for the autumn and winter months.
I will send your piece in a white hat box, which I carefully pack with acid free tissue paper, and finish with a pink satin ribbon. Storing your hat in this tissue-filled box will keep it in tip top condition for many years to come.
Although I don’t offer gift wrap for these designs, I can add a gift message card if you are gifting from a distance.
Please do complete your message in the box above, especially if you’d like it to be delivered direct to the lucky lass. Don’t forget to say who it is a gift for…and importantly, who it is from!
A Truly Couture Piece
The nautilus shell shapes of this headband have been created using a complex technique, first established in the 1950s, by couture milliners. The technique involves the hand-pleating and hand-sewing of Petersham ribbon, in order to create the “nautilus” shell shape.
In the 1950s, this was a technique used exclusively by couture hat makers. Nowadays, I am one of only a small number of skilled milliners, still able to practice the technique.
The laborious nature of the process and the high level of skill required means that this technique is not suitable for mass production. Therefore, this brooch really is a unique piece of expert craftsmanship.
To find out more about the history of the Nautilus technique, and my personal journey of discovery, read my series of blogs on the topic.
Alternatively, I could use the design as inspiration for a bespoke order – creating something unique, tailored to your specifications. For example, I could use a different colour to suit your outfit. If you would like to discuss a bespoke order, please do drop me a message, and I will get back to you.
