These Nautilus brooches have been made using a vintage millinery trimming technique.
Petersham ribbon is pleated and stitched to create a “nautilus” shell shape.
During the 1950’s this technique was used to create whole hats, but only by couture milliners. Due to the laborious process and the skill required to make them, this technique is not suitable for mass production.
This technique is now only used by a handful of milliners due to its complexity.
